“What is a copywriter?” Or variations on the theme is a question I’m asked frequently. To say I’m a writer sounds slightly self-aggrandising and is usually followed up by “can I buy your book on Amazon?”
I guess, to put everything nice and neatly into a nutshell, I write marketing copy for businesses. So, there you go.
Need more specifics?
Here are some of the projects I’ve worked on over 17 years as a freelance and in-house copywriter:
- Blog articles
- Web pages
- Newsletters / e-zines
- News reports
- About me / profile pages
- TV ads
- Radio ads
- PPC ads
- Brochures / leaflets
- Squeeze pages
- Landing pages
- On hold telephone messages
- Award nominations
- Product descriptions
- Case studies
- Sales letters
- Ebooks: Complete books on diverse subjects such as landscape gardening, loft conversions, and Labrador dogs to name but three
- Metadata
- Brand pages
- Buyer’s guides
- Product manuals
- Packaging text
It’s not an exhaustive list by any means but you get the picture. I guess the easy answer to the question, “what does a copywriter do”? Is just about anything which requires words. If you need copy written, in any form for either online or offline use, then you need a copywriter.
Most sole-traders and small business owners won’t be able to justify a full-time writer on their staff. Of course, you could always write your own copy. But is this the best use of your time? Instead of struggling with syntax and hooks you need to be running your business not to mention you may not enjoy writing. Few do. You may not be very good at writing either. Few are.
But, this is where a freelancer like me, OK exactly like me, can step in by providing your business with the skills of an experienced and professional copywriter for all your projects on an ‘as and when needed’ basis. I can save you time and money and, after reviewing the list above, you will find there isn’t much I can’t tackle.
